Permanent magnet system to guide superparamagnetic particles

2017

A new concept of permanent magnet systems for guiding superparamagnetic particles on arbitrary trajectories is proposed. The basic concept is to use one magnet system with a strong and homogeneous (dipolar) magnetic field to magnetize and orient the particles. A second constantly graded field (quadrupolar) is superimposed to the first to generate a force. In this configuration the motion of the particles is driven solely by the component of the gradient field which is parallel to the direction of the homogeneous field. Then the particles are guided with constant force in a single direction over the entire volume. The direction can be adjusted by varying the angle between quadrupole and dipo…

Characterization and Tuning of Ultra High Gradient Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles

2009

The application of quadrupole devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}\text{ }{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the M…

Miniature magnetic devices for laser-based, table-top free-electron lasers

2007

Truly table-top sized radiation sources based on compact laser-plasma accelerators require compact and strong focusing devices and efficient short-period undulators. Complementing our recent theoretical work on the feasibility of a table-top FEL, we here present the design and successful experimental characterizations of a 5 mm period length undulator and miniature quadrupole magnets with field gradients of the order of $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}/\mathrm{m}$.

Recent applications of the JYFL gas-filled recoil separator

1997

Abstract The gas-filled recoil separator RITU at the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL) was constructed in 1992–1993, and the first experiments were performed in late 1993. RITU differs from other gas-filled separators by having a vertically focusing quadrupole magnet in front of the separating dipole for better matching with the dipole acceptance. New results from RITU include the discovery of 13 previously unpublished isotopes of At, Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac and Th, while experiments in the transuranium region have also been made. Illustrative examples from these studies together with results on background properties, efficiency of separation, and other performance data will be p…

Development of economic MeV-ion microbeam technology at Chiang Mai University

2017

Abstract Developing high technologies but in economic manners is necessary and also feasible for developing countries. At Chiang Mai University, Thailand, we have developed MeV-ion microbeam technology based on a 1.7-MV Tandetron tandem accelerator with our limited resources in a cost-effective manner. Instead of using expensive and technically complex electrostatic or magnetic quadrupole focusing lens systems, we have developed cheap MeV-ion microbeams using programmed L-shaped blade aperture and capillary techniques for MeV ion beam lithography or writing and mapping. The programmed L-shaped blade micro-aperture system consists of a pair of L-shaped movable aperture pieces which are contr…

The new vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA at JYFL

2008

Abstract A new vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA (Mass Analysing Recoil Apparatus) is under design and construction at the Department of Physics in the University of Jyvaskyla. The separator is intended to separate reaction products from the primary beam in mass region below A = 150 . The ion-optical configuration of the separator will be QQQDEDM, where a magnetic quadrupole (Q) triplet is followed by an electrostatic deflector (DE) and a magnetic dipole (DM). The total length of MARA will be less than 7.0 m and the first order resolving power more than 250 for a beam spot size of 2 mm. In this contribution the main properties of MARA are given and results from simulations are shown.

The energy loss system of the electron scattering facility at the Mainz 300 MeV linear accelerator

1978

Abstract An energy loss system was constructed for the electron scattering facility at the Mainz 300 MeV linear accelerator with the aim of improving the energy resolution and increasing the useful beam current. The main features of the design are: (1) the existing system (conventional mode) is kept in full operation, (2) for the energy loss mode, the electron beam is deflected vertically downwards and then returned to the original beam line by the dispersion matching system, consisting of three dipole magnets and one quadrupole magnet, (3) the dispersion of the beam on the target can be tuned to the dispersion of the spectrometer with the aid of the quadrupole magnet. With the installation…

2012

To identify the atomic number of superheavy nuclei produced in Ca-48-induced fusion-evaporation reactions, an experiment aiming at measuring characteristic X-rays is being prepared at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The gas-filled separator TASCA will be employed, sending the residues towards the multi-coincidence detector setup TASISpec. Two ion-optical modes relying on differing magnetic polarities of the quadrupole magnets can be used at TASCA. New simulations and experimental tests of transmission and background suppression for these two focusing modes into TASISpec are presented.

Development of integrated superconducting quadrupole doublet modules for operation in the SIS100 accelerator

2015

The FAIR project (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) evolves and builds an international accelerator- and experimental facility for basic research activities in various fields of modern physics. Within the course of this project, integrated quadrupole doublet modules are in development. The quadrupole doublet modules provide a pair of superconducting main quadrupoles (focusing and defocusing), corrector magnets, cryogenic collimators and beam position monitors as integrated sets of ion-optical elements. Furthermore LHe cooled beam pipes and vacuum cold-warm transitions are used as ultra-high vacuum components for beam transportation. Superconducting bus bars are used for 13 kA curren…

Time reversal violating Magnetic Quadrupole Moment in heavy deformed nuclei

2018

The existence of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) and magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) violate both time reversal invariance (T) and parity (P). Following the CPT theorem they also violate combined CP symmetry. Nuclear EDMs are completely screened in atoms and molecules while interaction between electrons and MQMs creates atomic and molecular EDMs which can be measured and used to test CP-violation theories. Nuclear MQMs are produced by the nucleon-nucleon T, P-odd interaction and by nucleon EDMs. In this work we study the effect of enhancement of the nuclear MQMs due to the nuclear quadrupole deformation. Using the Nilsson model we calculate the nuclear MQMs for deformed nuclei o…
